The George Inn - Blackawton

We found this pub in Good Pub Guide app. It changed hands in December 2023 and the new owners are just about completing a big refurb. We were given a warm welcome and I was pleased to see Dartmoor Brewery’s “Jail Ale” on draft. It was perfectly kept and tasted wonderful. I ordered the homemade beef lasagne and a portion of triple cooked chip for the table. The lasagne was one of the nicest I have has for a long time, and a very generous portion. Served with some tasty flatbread and a nicely dressed side salad. The chips were perfect. Great lunch! Good luck to the new owners of this excellent pub.

We have just had a wonderful 4 night stay at The George, with our dog. The team couldn’t have been more welcoming, our room was vey comfortable, we ate in the pub 3 nights out of 4 and enjoyed the delicious food- plenty of variety…thank you! Ann & Chris - and Ellie

Another excellent stay at this incredible pub. Attended for a friends birthday. Amazing atmosphere. (Family) Bedroom was immaculate, again. Brilliant full English breakfast for me. Eggs, Avocado and sourdough for her and cereal for the boy. Perfect. Thanks.

Lovely friendly inn with great food. Stayed here whilst visiting a friend . Staff all very friendly . Room comfortable . Small issue with broken light that was rectified immediately ( even on a bank holiday ) therefore faultless ! Cooked breakfast delicious , with granola and yoghurt option too .

Booked this for a two night stop, for a running event nearby. Booking was easy, and communications from Jon was great. Hadn't really looked too hard at what the place was like, as we'd normally have camped. Anyway, the first obvious thing, was the journey there. Satnavs have NO understanding of road types. Many of South Devon's lanes are narrow, and I mean NARROW! To be honest it doesn't bother me, but it adds time to the journey, when, in fact, the slightly longer route on larger roads is quicker. Blackawton is a little off the beaten track, so you'll have a mile ish, of narrow roads, but not the narrowest like we had. On arriving, we parked up and made our way in with the dogs. Introduced ourselves and were received with a big warm, friendly welcome, by the staff behind the bar, who soon showed us to our room which had a great view across the South Devon countryside. The room, like the rest of the Inn is decorated in an amazingly different style to any other places I've stopped, and gives off a cosy warm atmosphere. The room we'd booked was, ''compact and bejou'', but had everything we needed. ( Jon had enquired in his emails, as to the size of our two dogs, as he'd wondered if the room was big enough, but as theyr'e only Terriers, I assured him it would be fine. having settled in, we made our way down to eat in the bar which was now full of locals. There's a good selection of local beers and all the usual other drinks available. The menu isn't vast, like you get in some places, but the food is definitely hand cooked, and not just pulled out a freezer and microwaved. Service was excellent and really friendly. We returned to our room early, as We needed to be up early. We could hear the customers below quite clearly. This was a Friday and, as we were later told, tends to be locals night, as opposed to Saturday, which is more diner's night. The noise level was noticeably more subdued on the Saturday. We didn't have breakfast on Saturday morning , as we were out before breakfast time. On the second night , we ate in the dinning area, as the bar was full, and again the same great level of service and quality of food. The second morning we had breakfast and were offered the usual coffee, juices, cereal, full English and , our choice of Avocado and poached eggs on toast which was again of great quality. We spoke to Jon, who's not originally from the local area, or for that matter this hemesphere, but is a proper character, with his accent and has an interesting story, as to how he ended up here. Like the rest of his staff, he took a genuine interest in us and why we'd come down and how I'd got on in my running event. Our stay was brilliant, we loved the atmosphere and the service. Our room was, as I said, 'compact', but I did look in one of the others and it was very spacious. One strange quirk of the Inn, is that there are no staff on site at night, and milk was left in the cooler behind the bar, to which you helped yourself. Quite odd to be left

We stayed for three nights in a super-king room which was distinctively and beautifully decorated and also well equipped. We didn't sample breakfast but we did have an evening meal in the pub which would not have been out of place in a 5 star restaurant. The staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. They also made our little dog most welcome. Altogether a wonderful stay and wouldn't hesitate to return.

Fantastic hosts, the Inn is located in a superb spot for visiting Dartmouth, Blackpool Sands, and this lovely corner of Devon. Breakfast is well thought out. You are offered plenty of choice, the full English is well presented and goes down well after a bowl of yogurt with fruit. The evening meals are varied and we would recommend the Monkfish and New Potatoes. The curries are spicy and great. Starters were sensibly priced, the Duck salad was great. Nothing was too much trouble and the staff were attentive and were always there to refill your glass. Plenty of different beers on tap and a good selection of well chosen wines.

Relaxing break with very good food and menu. Staff were very friendly and helped as much as they could. Location is scenic and geographically placed for trips to Totnes and Dartmouth. Would not hesitate to stay there again.

Had the good fortune of staying at the George last weekend. We booked two en-suite rooms as a family of four . Also understand the George has a family room. Absolutely fantastic. When we arrived we received a great welcome from Mark who showed us to our rooms. The rooms were spotless and very comfortable. Loved the kettle as I love a cup of coffee. Great TV also. Great shower in the en-suite. Catherine was very accommodating . We ordered a family meal last minute, she found us a table and the food was excellent. Great friendly atmosphere in this place. Great night sleep followed by a lovely family breakfast. All the more appreciated as we don’t get time to sit around the table at home for breakfast. Had a great chat with Jon the owner after breakfast. A good guy sadly not many around this day and age. Took Catherine’s advice and visited Dartmouth on the way home ( ten minutes away) . Thanks for the advice Catherine - it’s special. Good honest people doing a good honest job. We will return. Way to go George. Thank you.
