Whilst the visit was ruined by other guests, there are things that the hostel could do to reduce the impact of this. For example, the door to our room had a gap at the bottom, which meant every noise was heard very clearly, including that of our neighbour trying to kick his door in at 2:30am, and a group of young men running up and down the corridor banging on each others doors until gone 1am. The floor boards in the room next door were incredibly creaky, so when the occupants came back at 3am they could clearly be heard walking around. There were numerous doors in the corridor that slammed shut, which could easily be avoided by getting slow door closers (our bedroom door never slammed so they obviously already use some). I understand that these things are often dictated by upper management, but these things really can impact a stay. However, it wasn't all bad (hence the 3 stars). The staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful, and nothing was too much for them. The common areas are nice and ambient, and we enjoyed relaxing in the balcony area.
