I normally stay at another hotel in Brussels but I decided to try Martin's Brussels EU because I'd had such a positive experience previously at Martin's Klooster in Leuven. First the positives. The breakfast was really lovely, great variety and the restaurant itself is a very nice room with lots of windows. The staff were very nice also. The negatives. I checked in around 5pm but my room wasn't ready despite check in been 3pm. I didn't have that long to wait, maybe 20 minutes, but I thought it was very late for housekeeping to be still cleaning rooms. The room itself - a "charming room" - was utterly depressing. Very dark decor, very poor lighting and much smaller than the same standard room in Martin's Klooster. Bathroom was very basic. I checked at reception to make sure that it was what I'd booked, rather than a lower grade room, and was assured it was. The receptionist said he'd check about an upgrade to a bigger room, and offered me a "great" room. Whilst this was slightly bigger, it was equally dark and dreary. The only lighting in the main area was two small lights on the wall at the head of the bed, and small reading lamps either side of the bed. The bathroom was tiny and basic and the toilet was located separately, in a sort of cupboard. The room was right beside the lift and the housekeeping store room, so there was a lot of noise and banging. At no point was I advised that there would be an additional charge for the "upgrade," so was surprised to see a €20 surcharge on my invoice. I subsequently emailed the hotel about this and they offered to knock it off a future booking, should there be one. Overall, apart from the breakfast and the pleasant staff, it was a disappointing experience.
