In 1883, they built a summer home here, naming it ‘Windemere.’ This sat where the Post Office is currently located. Soon, Wheeler began hearing reports of silver strikes in Aspen, and he purchased interests in promising mines. Although his time at New York City's most prosperous department store produced years of record sales and profits, Jerome Wheeler’s ambitions were shifting toward Colorado. A stay in our cozy place will be the perfect space to rest after exploring downtown Manitou, climbing the Manitou Incline, hiking around Garden of the Gods, or walking through Old Colorado City. Pikes Peak is right out front and Red Rock Canyon Open Space has lots of gorgeous trails that are accessible from our neighborhood.We have converted our basement into a beautiful 3 bedroom/1 bath unit including a kitchenette/laundry with a complete remodel for a fresh and comfortable feel. You will have a private entrance through the walkout patio door. We live upstairs with our two girls! We also have an older dog, Chai, and a younger dog, Nala, who loves to meet new people. While our dogs love to get any attention you want to give them, we understand not everyone loves doggie love and are happy to accommodate.While the inside has been extensively updated, the outside is still a work in progress. Please be patient with us as we bring it up to par with the indoor space! The post office was built on the site in 1940.The carriage house was divided into seven apartments about 100 years ago. The building fell vacant in the 1980's. We purchased the building in 1993 with the intention of developing it into a bed and breakfast. Ultimately, due to the constraints of time, money, full-time jobs, and kids to raise, the bed and breakfast was never realized.
