Dar Ben Gacem

I have just returned from a wonderful 4 night stay at Dar Ben Gacem. From start to finish, the staff and surroundings were exceptional. Everyone is so friendly and kind. I stayed in the downstairs Junior Suite which was beautifully decorated. Breakfast in the courtyard was delicious and very generous. Dali deserves a special mention for being so helpful before and during my stay, helping to organise an airport transfer, lunch and an iftar meal for my first day, a guide for a medina tour as well as a driver for a day trip to Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and La Goulette. I will not forget his kindness and how welcome all of the staff made me feel. I visited during Ramadan and the medina is a special place to stay at this time, I would thoroughly recommend it.

If you choose to stay in this eight room totally refurbished medina house in Tunis you will not be disappointed. The house has been redecorated in very good taste. The staff is very accommodating, friendly and efficient. The rooms are exquisite. The breakfast is copious and well done. Take an evening meal here if you can. This place offers excellent value for $.

When travelling anywhere, we want a mixture of an authentic experience but also don't want to give up all our creature comforts. If this sounds like you, Dar Ben Gacem is the place to go. It is a converted mansion in the heart of the Tunis Medina that has been lovingly restored into a boutique hotel. The staff are some of the friendliest we have ever met and were always helpful. The Dar itself has a study stocked with fantastic books and a rooftop relaxation lounge that is perfect for summer evenings. The rooms are tastefully decorated and have all amenities you would expect in a top class hotel. Breakfast was great, fresh and gave you a culinary tour of Tunisia - from Djerba to Sousse. We went to a nearby 5* establishment for dinner and while it might have superficially looked nice, coming back to Dar Ben Gacem (especially with kids in tow) felt like coming back to a much more homely and welcoming environment. Highly recommend.

What an extraordinary place. Perfect location on the edge of the Medina. Beautifully restored, peaceful, comfortable...words cannot do it justice. I stayed 10 days in October 2025 and did not want to leave. The experience is as far as possible from what you'd find in a cookie-cutter big corporate hotel, People who look for things to complain about might find one or two quirks, for example my bathroom shower was a bit tight, and since it is a very old building, none of the architectural lines are straight...and this is what I love about it! The antique tiles, the curated museum quality artworks and collectibles, the special juices in the morning, the smiles of every staff person, the sense of history and community...lovely! It's perfect for people who love slow travel, to drink in a place, to experience a journey rather than a simple vacation. I loved the nooks and crannies to hang out and read or listen to the call to prayer. My room was a haven, spacious and comfortable with a sitting area, a study area and a raised bed in a glamorous nook. Thank you, Dali, Rim and all the staff!

Property was well maintained and in a good part of the old Madina. The room faces a courtyard and is extremely noisy. We were kept up past midnight due to other guests laughing and talking loudly. The bed is in a nook, surrounded on 3 sides by walls, so one person had to crawl over the other to get out. There were no blankets on the bed so we froze. We had to wear our full clothes and sweaters in bed but barely slept all night. What hotel welcomes their guests with nothing but sheets on their beds? It was a real shame, because otherwise it was neat renovated historical residence.
