Navy Gateway Inns & Suites Naval Base Point Loma, Main Base

If you have an active or retiree military ID card, you can stay at this somewhat unknown Navy facility. We just finished our second stay here and it was even better than the first one pre-Covid. First let me state that the staff here is absolutely first rate. Everyone we encountered was friendly, helpful and professional. We have stayed at a wide variety of military accommodations all over the US and these folks are some of the very best at what they do. This Navy Inn is in probably the best location in the entire San Diego area. At almost the tip of Point Loma, it is quiet except for frequent military helicopters that fly by quickly, mostly during the day. Rooms are basic but clean and comfortable. Housekeeping occurs only every three days. The view of the action on the San Diego ship channel and the open water is stunning. If you like watching boats of all types and sizes, from jet skis up to aircraft carriers and everything in between, this the place you want to be. It’s just incredible what you will likely get to see over a couple of days. Don’t forget your binoculars! Rooms are well equipped for short stays, but dining options inside the security gate are almost nonexistent. The only negative I can offer, and it’s a minor one, is that the lobby, stairways, and common areas all need some updating and painting. The parking lot areas look unkept with lots of leaves and dead vegetation almost everywhere. But beyond that, a wonderful experience if staying in San Diego area and you qualify with the required ID. One other tip for retirees: this is a four story facility with no elevators so if you are limited in mobility, ask for a first floor location. And always ask for a location facing the water.
