Mapakada Village - Mahiyanganaya

Looking at all the great reviews we booked one double room and another triple room a month ahead as it was a long weekend. When we finally got to the hotel after a very long drive from colombo the experience we had to face was so unfortunate! After getting us to pay inadvace to confirm the booking( which was 58,000 rupees for 5 adults) when we got there they have given the superior rooms away. The management staff who were not at all apologetic just simply said well the 02 small double rooms (which you don't see in pictures) are the one's which are remaining so you'll will have to just take that! Mind you these are so small and on top it they were trying to put a small bed with a spring mattress to make it a triple!!! We were not going to be cooped up for 02 days so we had to take our business elsewhere. What still shockes me is how they acted as if it's our fault, went as far as to say we weren't sure whether you will come!!!! After paying for a full day!! It was just a low class sales gimmick to make a buck to sell their horrible dingy rooms! So if you don't want to be stranded after going all that way go to ELEPHYARD hotel in mahiyanganaya, cheaper but quality is way better!!!

We booked triple room to stay for two nights to visit Vedda’s Village as well to enjoy staying with the lake view in the pool. We came with 3 kids to get our adventure just tonight. The room didn’t have any view (please see photo below) with two massive AC cooling blocks before our window. The bathroom is too tiny to squeeze with even one kid. The open restaurant terrace with lake view is under maintenance. The staff is not self-aware what they are selling. It doesn’t cost its money and doesn’t even worthwhile staying. The hotel is empty. They are reluctant to give us better room. My kids are too tired from the road so that we must pay full price (not discounted for inconveniences). I cannot tell more than I am totally upset and angry.

After more than five years living in Sri Lanka, I can honestly say I’ve never experienced a place like this hotel! This spot is a true paradise, far from the usual tourist routes. Surrounded by breathtaking nature, with a lake in front of the hotel and an infinity pool that blends perfectly into the landscape — it’s simply magical. The service was impeccable, something not very common around the country. The manager, Dinesh, welcomed us with such warmth and attention that we immediately felt at home. In the morning, we enjoyed breakfast on a little boat across the vast lake, surrounded by incredible wildlife — trees full of bats, herons, and exotic birds. Ragana, who guided us on the boat, knew everything about the local nature, the birds, and the elephants. Thanks to his skill, we were lucky enough to witness an elephant peacefully bathing in the lake — without the noise of jeeps or the crowds of mass tourism. It was truly magical to be part of that moment — it made the experience even more special. This place is a hidden gem. If you’re looking for an authentic experience, far from the crowds, this is the place. I want to come back — I could easily live here.

Easy to reach place right next to the road BUT after going inside you can’t say it’s near a road. Very quite and peaceful with beautifully landscaped gardens leading to the lake. Loved the nature, spotted elephants and various other wildlife. There are swings and hammock by the lake perfect spots to read a book. The food was good and we were offered the breakfast on a raft while floating on the lake and that was an amazing experience. All well set up by very attentive staff. The rooms and bathrooms were clean and there is refurbishments going on which means it would be even better for the next visitors. I saw the room upgrades were looking luxurious. This was our first visit, and it was recommended by a friend. On our first day, we went on the Vedda village tour, where our guide, Ushan, was fantastic. He answered all our questions and made us feel fully engaged in the experience. We also booked a hike to Ravena Falls with Ushan, and we had an amazing time. The hike was incredible, and I even got to sit underneath the falls—my wish came true! Ushan was a wonderful guide, providing us with a glimpse of village life and always eager to share and explain everything. Overall, this was a memorable experience for us.

It’s clear that every detail — from the peaceful surroundings to the warm hospitality — reflects your genuine passion for nature, culture, and authentic Sri Lankan hospitality. Sunrise over the lake is absolutely magical. • Comfortable Rooms: Spacious, clean, and well-appointed with a lovely rustic charm. The private balconies overlooking the lake were a real highlight. • Friendly Staff: The hospitality was exceptional. Every staff member was attentive, welcoming, and genuinely eager to make our stay special. • Delicious Food: A great selection of Sri Lankan cuisine prepared with fresh, local ingredients. The fish curry and lake fish specialties are must-tries. • Activities: They offer boat rides, bird watching, and cycling — a great way to explore the rural beauty of Mahiyanganaya. It’s also close to the Mahiyanganaya Temple and Dambana Vedda Village if you’re interested in culture. Final Verdict: Mapakada Village is ideal for those wanting to reconnect with nature, unwind, and experience authentic Sri Lankan countryside hospitality. Whether you’re a couple, family, or solo traveler, it’s well worth the visit.
