Hotel Viking

Historic Hotel in the Center of Newport. Staff was Friendly and helpful. Rooms were Comfortable and Cozy. My only Complaint is the Hot Tub was Only That, a Hot Tub. There Were No Bubbles! The Pool was Nice regardless.

Had a great time at the Hotel Viking. Staff very friendly. Food was very good. Room very clean. Only downside was the maid service is every other day. For what you pay, you expect every day service.

Terrible experience here, and I’m only on night 1 of 3. Currently looking for other hotels in Newport to pack up and move. I’ve had a king room booked since February, and a few weeks back I called to make it a suite with a king bed and pullout coach because my 13 year old son was joining us now. They said “all set - we made the change”. Upon arrival, come to find out they didn’t make the change and so we are crammed in a room with a cot for my son. I’m not even against cots in general, but you can’t even walk anywhere in the room with it in here, and the cot smells like mildew. That’s not even the worst part - the AC went out today and the room is 78 degrees. The pool had no towels (I had to go to the front desk to request some), the pool railing to get into the pool was broken, the paint on the ceiling is chipping and filling off, the towel in my room was dirty, the speakers upstairs at the Cap Club were burned out and half the drinks on the menu weren’t available because of some machine that was broken. It’s crazy that they can charge ppl $800 + a night for this. I come to Newport every 4th and was excited to try this hotel but I will never be back - and I would NOT recommend this to anyone else. I wish I had read some of the other reviews before coming because I would have thought twice before booking. Save your money - or if you are looking for something high end…try something else Forty One North is nice, Goat Island, the Marriott, Bretton….literally anything is better than what we have experienced here. Seems like they are just here to take people’s money and no one is actually managing the building or customer experience.

Do yourself a favor and stay at the Brenton. The hotel management should be ashamed that we were checked in to a room in such bad condition. The manager Cassie knowingly checked us in to a room with no working air conditioning, a clogged tiny sink - with a shelf over it which made it impossible to brush your teeth. ( see photo)We waited for 24 hours before they came to fix the air conditioner, we were on our way to the wedding we were in town for and we were almost late since we had to get ready with 2 service technicians in our room. When we got back it was still not fixed, we had to use a dusty old box fan which is what they sent up to our room. When we checked out we were told the room was being decommissioned, which was no surprise, it should have been before we were checked in. I mistakenly left a gold chain in the safe , I called 3 times each time the told me they would check and call me back but no one ever did . The bell hops were great, but the service at the front desk is terrible. I did not get any sleep for the 2 nights I stayed. If I could give this hotel 0 stars I would !!

Pros:Remodel looks nice, with a nice comfy bed. Nice shower Cons: AC issues in 2 different rooms, some outlets and lamps did not work. Outlets on the baseboard and kuerig wouldn’t reach it. Small rooms. I know its an old building but not comfortable for extended time Front desk ladies nice, no help at arrival door. Security guard very unpleasant

Recently was there after their 2026 renovation. Not impressed with the staff. No place to get a bottle of water or a place for evening coffee. Everything looked “sterile”. No appearance to a return to grandeur. It was “modernized”. You have to dodge painters and employees loitering in hallways. If they weren’t ready to provide 100% service, they should have waited. The myriad of add on charges were shocking.

We have been staying at the Hotel Viking for many years now, even had a room block here for our wedding a few years ago. However, this change in ownership gravely disappointed us. The room rates are more than double what they used to be, and the “renovations” they did are pretty much lipstick on a pig. The main lobby/restaurants didn’t need to be updated, the cafe stopped selling bagels and their coffee cups are smaller and overpriced now. Our door handle literally fell off as we were closing the door and we had to switch rooms - we saw two additional rooms with broken handles while there! We stayed there a week - on multiple days there was loud drilling/construction noises coming from above our room. One night we called down for new water glasses, as we had used ours and the cleaning staff hadn’t replaced them in two days - they never showed up with the glasses that night. The beds were hard as rocks, didn’t sleep well. The AC thermostat says “65”, when it’s absolutely not that cold in the room - they provided us a box fan to use at night. Also, the new thermostats are digital LED screens that do not turn off - so it is a bright light all night long. We had to put a towel over it to cover the light, ridiculous no one realized this when designing the rooms. The bathrooms are updated, but the ventilation fan stayed permanently on with no way to shut it off and it’s so loud. Ha, and the new shower door doesn’t even stay closed! It is a sliding glass door, when you slide it shut, it just slides back a few inches letting water escape and cold air in. This happened in two different rooms. The valet parking costs more than before too. Overall, not worth the new expensive price tag they want! In previous years it was a great place to stay for the price, we were willing to accept some of the small quirks of an older hotel due to it - it’s in perfect walking distance to everything. However, this new ownership clearly didn’t take their time to learn about Newport, and what this hotel really needs is someone who cares about historic properties, not just what profit they can squeeze out of it.

I ordered a medium rare burger. It was $26. It was well done,like a hockey puck and was small considering the size of the bun. While waiting for my car. the valet asked us "if we guys were all set?" . We, both ladies in our70's, were not all set. Someone should teach common courtesy to the staff.

The hotel is well located. It was recently redone and the decor is pretty. The staff is friendly. But the rooms are quirky. The first room they tried to put me in, 405, had no closet and no bureau at all and was the size of a postage stamp. It is hard to understand how they could design a room without a closet. My son's room, 403, had an armoire with a hanging bar with but shelves right below it so it was impossible to use to hang any clothes. See photo. He had to hang his clothes on the sprinklers. The bathrooms are very small. It is a cashless hotel so you cannot even get change at the front desk.
