Poiano Garda Resort Appartamenti ★★★

"Had a week here and wish we hadn't. But let's start with the good. The food is pretty good though limited in choice and the view down to the lake from the dining room and the apartments is spectacular. The sports facilities are excellent - Olympic sized swimming pool, two good quality padel courts and four red shale tennis courts plus a golf course and driving range. The apartments are clean but, like me, beginning to show their age. The whole layout is hilly but we were aware of that before we booked. So why the two stars? First of all to arrive at 11 a:m after nine hours travelling and be told to sit by the pool for another five hours because your room won't be available until 4 p:m is totally unacceptable. And when you point out that other guests who arrived from the same flight have been given their rooms you are told "They were the lucky ones." Shades of Fawlty Towers already. Secondly the location. We were well aware that the apartments were several miles out of Garda but the hotel says it has a shuttle service into town. However the service is limited. It doesn't start till nine and then there is a gap from 12:30 till 4:00 in the afternoon and the last shuttle from Garda is at 7:45 in the evening so no chance of a night out in Garda unless you're willing to pay 15 euros for a taxi back. And getting a taxi in Garda is by no means easy. The mini-bus also only seats eight so there is quite often a queue. Third is the mini-market. It isn't a mini-market. As the sign outside says it's a shop and it's apparently run by the same people as Monty Python's cheese shop. It sells coffee, tea, sugar, milk and wine and that's about it. And it's also only open between 8 and 10 a:m and only accepts cash. Didn't particularly bother us as we were staying half board but could be inconvenient for anyone self-catering. Fourth the superb swimming pool doesn't open till ten and shuts at six so no chance of an early morning dip. Finally we checked out in the evening before we left as we were being transferred to the airport at six the following morning. When I tried afterwards to buy a drink at the bar I was unable to as paying by cash or card was a problem. Apparently from what I've read and from hearing our tour rep speak to other guests these are regular complaints. The staff were all friendly and helpful but as a resort this could be so much better. Oh and Lake Garda is beautiful."

"What makes Madrigale a cut above other four and even fivestar hotels is the genuine pleasant atmosphere created by their team. It is a terrible feeling to go to a hotel and be greeted by or served by unhappy unpleasant personnel. Angelo treats guests with great warmth as though they are returning family. Even though he had a cast on his hand, it did not change his pleasant attitude or level of service. He gave his all to make sure our stay was a perfect as always. Federico and Sultan were two of our waiters at dinner. They both were always attentive to our table in a friendly and professional manner which made us feel like welcomed guests. Michael was not our server at dinner, however we noted that, even though he is young, his level of professionalism is like a seasoned pro. Emma who served at the bar was amazing. She constantly walked around the pool area in order to give guests the opportunity to ask her to bring them drinks / food. My husband and I both said that the bar probably made more Money this summer than any other summer, because of her exceptional work ethic. There is also a very lovely woman who we see every year working at breakfast. Unfortunately, I may have forgotten her name. I think it is Rovena. She is full of energy and is constantly checking and restocking the breakfast buffet. One evening Angelo was the head waiter. He was very busy with the special event that evening “dinner under the stars”. However, he continued to focus on the guests and continued to communicate with the guests. He asked everyone, if they were enjoying their meal, and explained and apologized for the short delays with the kitchen These short delays were welcomed by us, as it gave us time to digest our food prior to the next course being served. The key was that Angelo kept the guests informed which made us feel well looked after, and that we were not forgotten. The front desk was also run perfectly under the management of Manuela and her team. What makes the facilities a cut above the rest are the two large swimming pools and the numerous seating areas throughout the grounds. We often were the only two people in the pool because many preferred the full sun area with the second pool and intrigrated whirlpool. The hotel is in a very quiet area with only the sound of birds and crickets. There are no loud children, since the minimum age is 14 and up. Hooray! Perfect for families with older children. Half board is an excellent choice. Plan to gain a few pounds."

"Great location with a family atmosphere where you feel well looked after and comfortable. Everything is clean and well-kept, from the garden to the lobby to the rooms. We would love to come back and can only recommend the Relais. Unfortunately there is no actual kitchen. However, there are more than enough places to eat in the area, even within walking distance."

Relais Villa Alma ★★★

"We were visiting south Italy and our flights had an overnight stay in Rome. I ended up booking a room at Villa Alma for the night as it is close to the airport. The taxi from the airport dropped us at the entrance to the street instead of driving us to the front of the building. The driver was also rude and dismissive. It was late when we arrived. So about 10:30pm. Normally check in to Villa Alma closes at 9pm but the owner (Opi??) was waiting for us outside to guide us to the building. Since the taxi did not take us all the way to the door, we were not clear which building to go to but Opi waiting for us outside really helped. Opi was furious that the taxi driver was rude and also made us walk. When we told him what we paid for the ride, he told us he overcharged us and that was wrong. He said he was planning to go to the airport in the morning so he could drop us off as well. We went for a walk and had dinner. This is a nice neighborhood with a canal running through it. It has bridges over it. The view is nice. Also there are plenty of restaurants and bars open in very easy walking distance. We enjoyed our walk a lot. It seems this neighborhood has some festivals in summer so it might be good to go back. Anyway the room was clean, smelled good, well maintained and overall pleasant. We stayed at the room in the first floor (half a flight of walk up) Opi had a breakfast ready for us when we got up in the morning. He had juice, filled croissants, yogurt, coffee, tea etc. Overall I would say the breakfast was nice. He ended up driving us to the airport (along with somebody who works there) as he promised and refused to take money to make up for the bad treatment we had by the taxi driver the night before. We insisted but he refused it. Such a nice guy who made us feel good and happy to meet him. In general I prefer to not to write negative only reviews. But I made sure to write when somebody goes above and beyond. So in general this stay was definitely a good one."
