Before the new highway from Kunming and an airport with flights from major cities in China, it was a town for international back packers, Chinese wanderers and a free zone for artists, writers, musicians as well as for film and television actors, actresses and directors who wanted a reprieve from the competitive challenges of daily life in big cities. They came for the good weather , the mountains and clouds which surround Old Dali, and the views of the remarkable Erhai Lake which extends for miles. They also came for the camaraderie of old and new friends and the interaction with people of diverse social, cultural and economic backgrounds. The other draw was the lively and colorful Bai culture in nearby villages including Xi Zhou and Shuang Lang. Some Chinese bought or rented houses in Dali and nearby villages or arranged to stay in guest houses during vacations. Others stayed permanently to begin a new life. They opened guest houses, cafes and bars and an interesting music scene emerged. Once major newspapers in the US described Old Dali and its surroundings as a blend of the bohemian neighborhoods of San Francisco and the French Riviera.
