"Terror in the Night Not only will my wife and I not be staying at The Constance again, we will never stay at any inn anywhere. Our terrifying experience has opened our minds. We think now, "who are these strange guests and service people I'm suddenly sleeping in a strange house with?" Our first night, we awoke around 2:15am to the sounds of someone pacing outside our bedroom. And I heard what sounded to me like chanting in a foreign language. And it sounded as if, every time the man reached our door, he hissed behind the door. That's what it sounded like to me. But whether this stranger was singing along to some music he was listening to with headphones on, or chanting, doesn't really matter (perhaps it was some type of cultural chant I'm not familiar with). He didn't have to be saying anything. The fact remains that someone was pacing outside our room in the middle of the night, for at least 45 minutes, in some unfamiliar inn with old flimsy doors and flimsy locks, and we had no idea who it possibly could've been, and it was terrifying. We thought: Why would a guest be out there? Is he crazy? Why isn't the front desk stopping him? The front desk is straight down hall. There must not be someone at the front desk. Has someone broken into the house? Worse, the inn keeps all the room keys in an unlocked door right under the stairs (we passed it every time we went to our room). So whoever it was could easily get in. We called the front desk (even though I'm thinking that, if someone is at the front desk, they would stop whoever is pacing outside our room, wouldn't they?) There was no answer. And eventually, trying to figure out what to do, too scared to make noise, the pacing and chanting/singing not stopping, we decided the only safe thing to do was to call the police, as confronting a stranger pacing outside your room in the night seemed too dangerous. When the cop came, and we discovered the front desk assistant was actually the one responsible, (though at the time he lied to us and said it wasn't him even though it clearly was, and this was later confirmed by management via the cameras), I was furious, but we had to keep the peace. We were staying in this inn for the next two nights, and we were frankly afraid to do much. He seemed mentally ill and possibly dangerous (not saying he was, just what it seemed like to us). How do you demand a police report against a person who'll be watching over the place where you sleep? After the cop left, about five minutes later, the front desk assistant quietly knocked on our door. "Front desk, " he said, in a deadened tone, astoundingly different from the tone he used with us and the police just five minutes ago. (It's just about 4am now.) We didn't answer. Did we hear that right? He knocked again. "Front desk," he said. "What do you want?" I asked loudly. He wanted to know the exact number we called for the front desk. My wife told him the numbers, and then he left. It was creepy as can be. We hardly slept"

"I enjoyed my stay at this newer hotel in the Berkshires. Good points that I remember: - nice decor; - very clean rooms; - good shower pressure, which is a nice change. But the following points were not that good so this is why I gave 4 stars and not five: - no safe in the room which is a major irritant. I would say that 99 % of hotels no matter which category have safes in Europe but for some reason this is not the case in the US. Perhaps it is a company directive but the Element in Atlanta has safes so for me this is a must to add; - there are only 1 or 2 choices (one day only it was 3) of hot food at breakfast so if you do not like them you are out of luck. But if you do the quality is better than at most hotels which include breakfast. So I would stay there again, it is just inconvenient as I need to bring a Kensington lock for my laptop and carry my passport everywhere."

"My stay at Gateways Inn was overall a pleasure, with a couple of mysteries/things I would have preferred to be different. First, the positive aspects, of which there are many: - location is amazing -- a quick ~1 block walk to downtown - best bathtub EVER! I chose the Portia room, because it had a lovely bathtub with a handheld shower. I adore baths, and didn't expect to want to take a shower, so I figured it would be perfect, and it was! Really amazing tub, filled very quickly, water was very hot, etc. - generously sized, beautifully decorated and comfortable room, with two huge windows, electric operated gas fireplace, and a smallish flat screen tv. - king sized, very comfortable bed. Not super tall, not "squishy", not hard -- just right. - My room, and the Inn in general, were both very *quiet* -- I had neighbors directly next to me, but I never heard them and they never heard me (which is good, since I'm a night owl) - a generously sized breakfast is included - the room was impeccably clean - check in and out were a breeze And then, the mysteries/things I might have wished were different: - check-in and check-out were a breeze, but other than those times and the one breakfast I attended, I never saw a staff member. It felt a bit as though I was in an AirBnB; the key card enabled access to the building (which was essentially locked all weekend after the weekend guests arrived on Friday), and to my room. At one point, I postulated how I'd deal if I lost my key card, or if they became inactive (close to proximity to a magnet, or something like that). - breakfast selections were a bit limited, and further limited for me because of dietary restrictions. When it arrived, it was *extremely* salty. I had asked for no seasoning, but said "salt is okay"; I think that may have been taken not as I had intended it. - there is no "lounge" area at all. The foyer is *gorgeous* -- large, open to the 2nd floor, with a gracious stairway. Further in to the right is the breakfast room (which I'm assuming is the restaurant when it's open for the season), and straight ahead is a bar. I visited others in town over the weekend at their Inns, and saw comfortable living room spaces with couches, games, etc. Gateways has nothing like that, which probably added to the quietness. - the room had a slightly perfumed scent, which I personally don't prefer; but it wasn't overpowering Overall, I would gladly stay at Gateways again. It was very well located for the event I was attending, my room was perfect for me, and I was able to socialize with friends in other ways."
