It is a large property with all the perks of a big resort—like an aquapark, multiple pools, and great entertainment—yet it still manages to feel cozy and intimate. Even with full occupancy, the hotel was quiet (!), and there was absolutely no "sunbed war."What we loved:The aquapark: Very fun and attractive.The architecture: Low-rise, guest-friendly buildings. The tiled roofs, green shutters, and matching curtains create a wonderful, charming atmosphere.The downsides:The bathroom: It is definitely in need of refreshment.The food: Typical, average all-inclusive buffet.Overall, our stay was a big plus. "From the moment you walk into reception at Globales Los Delfines, you are greeted by professional, friendly and noticeably high-quality staff. The reception area gives the impression that you have arrived somewhere rather smart. Check-in is efficient, the welcome warm, and you immediately feel you are in capable hands. Then you open the doors from reception and walk towards the pool. Any preconceptions created by the polished reception evaporate almost as quickly as the air conditioning disappears behind you. Suddenly you are greeted by a rather different scene: sweating, handkerchief-headed, almost-red Brits drinking pints at 9.30 in the morning, enormous bellies proudly on display, some eating bread rolls that appear to have been liberated from breakfast for later consumption. It is quite the transition. That isn’t really the hotel’s fault, of course, and in many ways it’s part of the entertainment. The Battle of the Sunbeds What is within the hotel’s control is the extraordinary sunbed situation. A contingent of spectacularly entitled guests appears to have annexed the prime poolside territory by leaving hotel-room towels permanently draped over the best sunbeds — not for an hour, not while they have breakfast, but overnight and seemingly for the duration of their holiday. I’ve heard of the occasional Anglo-Spanish disagreement over Gibraltar, but surely this particular territorial dispute could be better managed. Several guests raised it with the hotel. The response was essentially: “We used to lock the beds up. What can we do?” Well… collect them? Remove anything left overnight, hold the towels at reception and release the sunbeds back into the wild each morning. Problem solved. . The hotel staff have probably avoided such confrontations as many of the clientele have accents which intimidate "potential imminent violence". Instead, possession appears to be nine-tenths of the law at Los Delfines, and a faded hotel towel constitutes a legally binding land claim. The pool The pool itself is OK, although not as pristine as you might expect from a four-star hotel. By the afternoon we regularly noticed an unpleasant yellow-green scum gathering at the shallow end. And no, for once I am not talking about the clientele. The surrounding pool area could also do with more attention. Ice-cream sticks, straws, wrappers and the usual family-pool debris accumulate around it. Nothing horrendous, but enough to detract from what could be a much smarter environment. We rarely saw the area being properly swept or hosed down, and a regular thorough clean would make a surprisingly big difference. At this point I fully expect to return home with 200 fags, a bottle of Stolly and a verruca. The food — and the Great Orange Squash Debt We’re half-board so were surprised to discover that soft drinks with dinner aren’t included either. Four orange squashes: €10. Every night. And every night came the remarkably efficient ritual of ensuring paymen"

Hotel Loar Ferreries ★★★

"Loar has three kinds of accommodation - hotel/suites in one building and apartments and studios is the adjoining building. The buildings are seamless on he ground floor but separate lifts service the two buildings. We stayed in a one bedroom apartment which has a balcony big enough for two chairs so great for looking at the comings and goings of locals and their families and what was going on in the square. The 12 apartments have outward facing balconies whereas the studios face the rear. I think it is worth the extra cost to have an apartment as we spent a fair amount of time just enjoying the atmosphere of the town. I don't know about the hotel rooms as we much prefer the space of an apartment and the flexibility to cook our own meals and snacks. The apartment was clean, comfortable and well equipped. The highlight was the roof terrace with views, loungers, lovely pool and jacuzzi. There is also an indoor heated pool which was a bit awkward to access as unless the restaurant was open the only way in was via a spiral fire escape. Being able to choose which pool you fancied was a real treat and we mostly had the roof terrace to ourselves. The town itself had no real must-sees for tourists but it was a convenient base to explore the island. Although Loar does not offer parking we always found a space within a few minutes' walk. There are enough places to eat and drink with three decent sized supermarkets, a butcher and fishmonger if you wanted to cook. The apartment facilities made this easy. It is quite surprising to have such a large establishment in an inland town but it seemed quite busy and the bar & restaurant were popular. I certainly recommend Loar and Ferreries. Staying in a central town worked well for us. Don't hesitate to stop at a cheese producer, signposted everywhere. Mahon cheese is excellent."
