La Tonnara di Bonagia Resort

Superb stay in this gorgeous quaint hotel in Bonagia. The reception staff were so helpful and kind and made us feel like we could ask for anything. The breakfast buffet became a bit of a fight in the morning, but learning more about the Italians around a buffet, we couldn’t eat during the dinner buffet dinner either for this reason. No shade on the staff, but if you’re going up against this beast then get your elbows greased. The pool area was superb as was the beachy area. Room was clean and beautifully decorated. Our view was absolutely stunning, overlooking the small fishing village, courtyard and we could even see Erice on top of the hill. Desperately romantic and the perfect way to end our trip. Thank you so much!

Very basic for a 4 star hotel, but the new renovated rooms are a big improvement.

Nice pool and you can go directly into the sea from a platform. The room was very dated and old fashioned - needs updating. We only had breakfast in the hotel which was ok. There is a pizza van in the evenings in town go there for fabulous authentic pizza in the evening.

Absolutely great place to stay! Nothing to complain about, I absolutely recommend this ressort. Grazie mille e a la prossima.

Whilst the resort was fine, it was not a great location, the room was very dated and an uncomfortable bed and worst of the food was diabolical. The food was sub-standard, not generous at all and above all not tasty! This does not represent the authentic taste of Italian food and standards. I hate to say this but at times mosquitos were landing on the food which were exposed. The service was mediocre - staff could barely speak English and some were in fact unfriendly and did not seem to take pride in their jobs. The temparature at the pool was cold and the spa was controlled by the lifeguard but only if you ask him to turn it on. This resort is not of 4 star quality. However, they had a free wine tasting session and gave a free bottle of wine upon arrival. It's ok if you don't want to venture out or taste better food.

This is THE quietest resort I have ever been to. Arriving on 21st September 22, the season was over and everything closed. We were in apartments that were spotlessly clean however quite dated. One of us had a double bed and the other a set of bunks - we are both women over 60's. Our board was on a half-board basis so there really was no need for a solid 2-ring hob plus you had to switch off bathroom power for it to work. The apartment was first floor and we had a very small balcony containing a clothes drying rack but there was no room for even a small table or chairs. It was conveniently located to pool in one direction and restaurant in the other. I have been going away since the late 70's and this is the first time I found a bit of a language barrier in that few people spoke English which is understandable but caused a bit of a problem at meal time in the evening - we did get excited to find 'chicken' on the menu but that turned out to be 3 chicken nuggets. The staff were lovely and very friendly although it was only water or wine in the restaurant, no beer or spirits. We did make it in time for a G & T in the very quiet bar ran by one member of staff. Most of the other guests were Italian and playing cards but no one else appeared to purchase any drinks. The toilets were locked up at 9.50pm by the maintenance guy so if you wanted to stay at the bar for a few drinks you had to go back to your own room. Although remote and quiet, it really was a place worth seeing.

Just left this resort and it was fabulous. Lovely resort, helpful staff, beautiful rooms, and an absolutely stunning pool. The only small thing for me, was that the dinner, buffet style, didn’t have any fly covers, so flies walked all over the food. Another small thing is that (out of the control of the staff, of course, but something they could maybe address) the closest shop (the MD) is about 1km away, so if you want to go buy water it is a bit of a trek. It would be good if they had a shuttle for a small fee, or even a little convenience shop on-site (with low prices! Water is an essential!!) but of course if you drive, there is parking so it’s really something to help those not in a car. A shuttle bus from trapani town to the resort would be useful as well for non-driving guests, again for a small fee (it’s only about 15km away so perhaps investing in a minibus or seven seater van would be a benefit for them? Charging enough to cover fuel plus say €5 per passenger would work, I think? Might be worth costing out to see if worth it. I paid €25 for a taxi there, which as a solo traveller was a lot for a short journey, but I guess for a couple would be fine…. Oh, and they say Wi-Fi is free, but when I went to link to it there was a cost, so not sure what happened there? Will definitely return. It was a gorgeous resort and I really enjoyed my time there. But will defo borrow a friends car to get there and get my water trips done!

What we liked: + Spacious two bedroom apartment living room + Lovely setting under the mountain that has town called Erice on top, and Mt Cofano is also quite visible. + No indoor hotel hallways leading to our apartment (and overall well ventilated spaces - very useful in corona times) + Superb gated parking lot + Access to large safety deposit boxes at the reception 24/7 (since our apt didn’t have a safe) + Excellent dinner + Warm, relaxing pool + Management that cares about the hotel, and we saw lots of little improvements along the way even without us complaining. What we didn't like: - Short bed in main bedroom - Blankets disappeared after a day but were returned to us after we complained (needed for cold toes on a short bed!) - Various idiosyncrasies exposed to the guests (separate billing of the club at the pool, itemized receipts getting signed at dinner although we prepaid for half-board) - Not enough staff speak English fluently - No microwave in the kitchen (we did get the kettle when we asked for it) - Little variability of the food for breakfast, plus omelet would run out quickly at breakfast during the first few days. - Super aggressive timeout for wifi access
