Hotel Petry

We had a good welcome to Hotel Petry, we were early but we were able to check-in as our room was ready. We booked a Deluxe Room which was on the first floor, it was extremely spacious and well appointed. The room had a sofa bed, mini fridge, tea and coffee making facilities and a lot of storage space. The bathroom was fine with a powerful shower and a large bathtub, wall mounted soap dispensers were provided. The buffet style breakfast each morning was outstanding, there was an extensive selection available. The breakfast was available at extra cost but respresented incredible value for money. We had a takeaway pizza from the onsite restaurant one evening as we hadn't booked a table in advance, it was delicious. Hotel Petry is conveniently located in the centre of Vianden, it is a delightful hotel with friendly and efficient staff and hopefully we will be able to stay again in the future.

hotel is ok but not at all happy with 2 issues. firstly no key available for room safe. also no internet . wasnt told this until after i had paid bill at check in as requested at reception. would not have booked this hotel if no safe or internet offered. will not return.

A good hotel, very welcoming and the person on the desk spoke perfect English and could help us out. Good parking. Great location. We booked breakfast which was ok but not as good as others we've had in Europe (but €13pp was higher than we'd usually have paid). We were advised to book a table at the hotel restaurant as it would get busy so we did, but I think we should have gone elsewhere. The food was good but not great. We had pizzas which were supposedly famous but honestly they were very basic. The service wasn't great either, we waited 45 minutes for our food, no one came to offer more drinks, staff were hard to wave down, when I finally got someone I asked about our food and he disappeared to find out, did not return to update us, and then our food arrived about 10 mins later piping hot, so I suspect we were forgotten and it was rushed through. Nobody came to tell us any more, apologise, offer free drinks etc. The desserts similarly were good but not great. The restaurant also was popular but not rammed full so I suspect they asked us to book so that we would definitely eat there. On the whole would definitely stay at the hotel again, room was very good & a great price and a fan was provided as it was warm, but probably wouldn't do breakfast or dinner here again. I do strongly advise a trip to Vianden, it's a charming little town with a very impressive castle overlooking the valley.

We drove all the way from Bruges, through Brussels and Wallonia, and then some German fields dusted with snow. Luxembourg appeared out of nowhere on the crest of a wooded hill, and then Vianden five mins after that. On a cold day, Hotel Petry was a warm suite with a chateau-style window that looked out across the river valley and the tiny town clinging to it. Hotel Petry is one of those places you only seem to get in the Rhineland, where everything's pretty but not showy, and everything works. The beds are soft and the showers are hot and strong. The staff all speak English and three other languages. The restaurant serves good quality local dishes, and the beer goes down unpretentiously well. It's quite literally two doors along from Victor Hugo's House, and after around 90 mins visiting inside we walked across the bridge and up the cobbled hill as gentle snowflakes started to fall. We'll go back again one of these Winters, in the hope that we can have another evening like it.

We have stayed here many times before, but covid created an annoying hiatus. So it was nice to be back this year again. I always say that it's easy to look good when everything is going well and that the true test is when there is a problem. This time there was. Our room had a number of issues, none of them major, but collectively it meant it really wasn’t great. The hotel was full, so a room change wasn’t possible that night, but for the second night of our two night stay we were swapped, not just to another room but upgraded to what we reckoned was one of the best in the hotel. They serviced this room very early so we could move and still benefit from the majority of the day and enjoy the village and the hotel's facilities, which are excellent. There is a vast terrace which they use to serve evening meals when the weather is warm enough. It wasn’t on this occasion but we did enjoy a very good flammkuche at lunchtime in the pleasant autumn sunshine. Having had that we decided to go lighter on our evening meal (the first night’s vast portions in mind). But the salade paysanne was also enormous (and delicious). The wine choices are good. We stuck with carafe wine that was very good value. I should also mention that breakfasts here are also very good with a excellent choice of fresh items. So, a problem this time – but we will be back as soon as we can!

Regarding a visit to the restaurant: with four people we were seated close to where the pizza's were made. When trying to reposition her chair, a women in my company hurt her finger because the seat was not attached to the frame of the chair. But, onto the actual food experience. We ordered drinks and pizza. Drinks came relatively fast, for the pizza's we had to wait more than one hour. The chefs were working hard, but apparently their numbers and oven-capacity did not agree with the number of customers. The same was valid for the waitresses, worked hard, but could not be bothered to write up our second round of drinks. As a matter of fact, we were not attended to for the whole hour of us waiting for the pizza. Afterwards, while adressing our experience and also pointing out that other people who came in after us got their pizza before us, the manager said that people who had a reservation beforehand, will receive better service than people who did not. According to him we should have been told by the waitress that we had to wait at least an hour, but this fact was omitted. In the end, 5 euro's was substracted from our bill for our inconvenience. Quite meagre when considering that the pizza's were around 16 euro's each.
