But beyond its renowned title as the "World's small commodity capital", this is also a city with a rich history that dates back to 221 BC. Fotang Ancient Town, located about 10 km from the city center, is a living testimony of Yiwu's thriving past as a river trade hub from 14th-19th centuries. This is a charming one-day (or half-day) destination for those seeking a cultural and traditional heritage experience away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is easily reachable by taxi. There are lots of local snacks and crafts shops, as well as restaurants, hotels and even a shopping mall just outside the old part of the town. The best time to visit is in the evening when it's beautifully lit.
