I have grave misgivings about hotels in the busiest parts of the Lake District, especially at holiday times. Obviously they will be relentlessly overcrowded, with harassed and unfriendly staff. I’ve wanted to go back to the Proper Lake District for a while though so took a risk on the King’s Head. It’s easy to find on the ear popping main road up from Grasmere, just beyond the impressive hulk of Steel Fell, close to Thirlemere. Parking anywhere in the Lakes is hideous and expensive. Not here. Relaxed and plenty of room. It’s a long building with a pleasant bar restaurant area and beer garden. I found a rather pleasant residents lounge where a lady called Jo checked me in and made me feel welcome. It does get busy with passing trade but the staff look after their residents. They flogged me decent real ale and Jura whisky (the proper stuff). Breakfast is briskly table served from a menu and is well presented. I didn’t eat otherwise there but the food is popular and well priced. The road outside is busy and a bit of a racetrack, and the occasional fighter jet roars between the mountains on low altitude practice, but the relentless bleating of the sheep opposite soon returns things to normal. I was a little sorry to depart, but the manager said he hoped I would come again. I believe I will, and will even bring my wife.

It is a short 15min walk from Penrith station and a cozy b&w. Breakfast is served to your room as the owners are elderly and want to keep covid safe rules ongoing. Otherwise, a very pleasant experience, neat room with kettle and coffee/tea if you need, tv, nice shower room and towels provided. If you want a less commercialised experience and more local experience, this b&w is recommended!

I arrived on a stormy night in the lake district - on entering the hotel I was met with a warm glow from the log fire and a very warm welcome from the receptionist. As the hotel dining room was about to close, a room was sorted and the kitchen kept open for an evening meal - a delicious melt in the mouth steak was a pleasure after a 6 hour drive from the south of england, washed down with a welcome glass of Shiraz. The bed was very comfortable, the room had a large bath and separate shower cubicle and copious hot water. The decor and fittings were in sympathy with the age and history of the hotel, a pleasant change from the blandness of more modern mass market hotels. The staff were very friendly and it was a pleasure to be assisted without having to use automated impersonal systems. I will not hesitate to stay at the hotel again when I am next in the area.

The property and the atmosphere is lovely. The view from the restaurant garden is very pleasant and beautiful. The room size, bathroom size and amenities were good. We faced 1 major problem to be precise, which made us a bit painful. Чистота - комната была чистой, кроме коврового. Она не чувствовала, что она была пуста. Там, вероятно, жило животное, оставающееся в этой комнате перед нами, и на ковре было много волос. Я понимаю, что это дружелюбное имущество для домашних животных, и у меня нет никаких проблем с этим. Но надлежащая уборка комнаты до следующего проверки является основным ожиданием. Мы не могли ходить по полу, не покрывая ногами волосы. Кроме того, все остальное было очень хорошо. Завтрак был также хорошим, а обслуживание клиентов было очень вежливым и гостеприимным.

Outstanding, I had a superb stay ,the George is unique Whilst, having a timeless aspect ,magnificent historic building it has modern features, and aspects,that make it very comfortable. The best hotel experience, I have had for year's, I am looking forward to staying again, a perfect end to my Christmas break.

Two single beds spaced together instead of a double bed as advertised. Apart from that everything was expected.

Very old looking run down needs totally  decorating from top to bottom ….. killed 5 flees in my bed not a clean place . On the plus side the food . evening meal was good breakfast was fab …. Entertainment was good. Bar was busy people dancing throughout the night every one enjoying their self’s 

В отеле, в котором я изначально был забронирован, случилось наводнение, поэтому в последнюю минуту мне пришлось искать другой. Я нашел Arkale Lodge, и он меня не разочаровал. Номера довольно простые, но очень чистые, что, на мой взгляд, важнее шикарного номера. И, безусловно, достаточно хорошие за ту цену, которую я заплатил. Джентльмен, который проводил меня по окрестностям, был дружелюбным и услужливым. Завтрак был с 7, что идеально подходило для продолжения моей прогулки по Адриановой стене. Завтрак был включен в стоимость номера и был исключительным (полный английский завтрак, к которому я легко приспособился, так как не ем мясо). Он был обильным, вкусным и свежеприготовленным.
